BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Sony is considering launching an Internet-based television service this year, offering a mix of live TV programming and video on demand.

Andrew House, group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, announced the news on Tuesday.

According to House, Sony has been working on a service that can stream live television over the Internet, and aims to roll it out by the end of the year.

Users will be able to personalize channels catered to the viewer's tastes, House said, it will even enable users to see what their friends are watching.

The new product will combine live programs with an on-demand library of films and TV shows, which can be a tough challenge for traditional cable and satellite providers.

Sony narrows down the service testing location to the United States. Based on the number of homes with Internet-connected Sony devices, House confidently believes the service would be among the top five providers of TV programming in the country.
