Singapore to demand new homes to have optical fiber termination points

SINGAPORE, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Singapore will make it mandatory for new homes to have optical fiber termination points starting from May 1, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore said on Wednesday.

The new rules under the new Code of Practice for Info- communication Facilities in Buildings is aimed to facilitate ease of access to fiber broadband services for new home owners, it said.

Each living room and bedroom in the new homes will be provided with cabling that is capable of carrying data speeds of more than 1 gigabytes per second.

Developers and owners of buildings and developments will also be required to provide space for the deployment of infrastructure for enhanced mobile coverage in existing and new developments, though some flexibility may be given to the developers and owners in meeting the requirements.

Leong Keng Thai, a senior official of the Infocomm Development Authority, said the changes are to ensure that homes are built for future infocomm needs brought about by developments such as the nationwide deployment of the next generation national broadband, the increasing mobile penetration rate, and the increasing pervasiveness of smartphones, and other mobile broadband-enabled devices.

"These changes will benefit consumers and improve their mobile and broadband experiences," he said.

Singapore is one of the world's most Internet-savvy cities. Authorities and private companies have been trying to deploy the next generation fiber broadband in order to facilitate ease of access to fiber broadband services.
