CANBERRA, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- An Australian Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWAC) aircraft has been sent to participate in the Proliferation Security Initiative Exercise (PSI) in South Korea, the Defence Department announced Monday.
The exercise codenamed Eastern Endeavour 2012 will be held from Sept. 24 to 27.
PSI Exercise, launched by then United States President George W. Bush in 2003, will be conducted in waters off 100 kilometres south of the South Korean city of Busan, with the Wedgetail supporting ships of other participating nations, namely the U.S., Japan and South Korea. It is the first time that South Korea, joining the PSI in 2009, has hosted such an exercise.
Australia's Wedgetail aircraft has a very advanced capability to detect and track ships and aircraft over a wide area.
