IRAQ-NIMRUDE-ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

Photo taken on Dec. 26, 2016 shows the destroyed Nimrud archaeological site, south of Mosul, Iraq. The archeological site of Nimrud was founded in the 13th century B.C. and became the capital of Assyrian empire. In March 2015, the ancient site was destroyed during a campaign of destruction against heritage sites under the control of the IS militants. The Iraqi army recaptured Nimurud in November 2016 as part of the massive operation to retake Mosul.(Xinhua/Khalil Dawood)
