KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces after five days of fierce fighting evicted Taliban militants from the northern Kunduz city and after pulling down Taliban white flags from each part of the city hoisted government three-colored flag on the top of Provincial Governor House on Monday.

"The enemies have been defeated and the situation is returning to normalcy," deputy to chief of army staff General Murad Ali Murad told reporters after hoisting government flag on the building of Governor House, here.

General Murad who is leading the counter-offensive and cleanup operations in Kunduz also noted that the enemies have hugely suffered and search operation to locate any Taliban insurgent if hidden in houses is continuing.

Taliban militants in a surprise attack overrun major parts of Kunduz city, the capital of Kunduz province last Monday, but the government forces backed by U.S. military later launched a counter- offensive.

"The cleanup operation would last until lasting peace returns to Kunduz and adjoining areas, General Murad said.
