LJUBLJANA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,100 crossing-border refugees from Croatia were apprehended by police in Novo mesto area in Eastern Slovenia alone by Saturday morning, according to the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) .

They were processed at the reception center in Brezice and distributed to accommodation centers around the country, the news agency quoted Novo mesto police spokeswoman Alenka Drenik as saying on Saturday.

There are several hundred refugees still waiting at the Obrezje-Bregana border crossing. Reports indicate there may be over a thousand still there.

At Slovenian Rigonce crossing at the border with Croatia, where several hundred refugees were attempting to cross the border last night, about 40 remained. Police assumed the others stayed the night on the Croatian side.

The refugees, among them small children, had gathered in front of the closed border crossing of Rigonce after they left a reception center in Croatia.

While the Croatian police first tried to prevent them from proceeding towards Slovenia, it soon let them go on.

The situation escalated as a group of refugees assisted by several Slovenian and Croatian activists pushed towards the Slovenian police cordon. The police in turn used a tear gas.
