According to local press, the Wounaan are one of the seven indigenous ethnic groups in the Panamanian territory, and are dedicated mainly to fishing and the elaboration of crafts of cocobolo wood. However, the illegal logging of the cocobolo trees by settlers and companies have caused clashes between the indigenous group and loggers recently. The Wounaan asked Panama's government to provide protection in the zone and to enforce laws that define the regional territory and collective lands they inhabit.
