BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- US electric car maker Tesla Motors revealed on Tuesday that it will start offering its popular Model S sports car to the Chinese market this summer, CRI reports.
"We do have great expectations for the market in China, certainly, and will open more showrooms in big cities without restrictions on hybrid vehicles by the end of this year," Tesla's R. manager Esben Pedersen told CRI.
The Silicon Valley-based electric auto maker, established in 2003 and was the first to use lithium batteries to power automotive vehicles, has caused a sensation in North America.
Tesla Motors Inc. told a news conference at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) that it will put more emphasis on Asian countries, and China is at the top of the list.
"First of all, most of our high-end products target rich people, and China is the second [largest] luxury car market globally; secondly, the Chinese government is very interested in electric cars, and they combat European governments; they actually have policies on electric cars that make it very attractive for electric car companies to operate in China," Esben Pedersen explains.
The price in China of the Model S sports car has not yet been determined.
