10,000 people fear dead in C. Philippines by typhoon "Haiyan"
MANILA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- An estimated 10,000 people in central Philippine province of Leyte might be killed by super typhoon "Haiyan", local media reported Sunday.
The figure was based on estimates of officials in Tacloban city, the worst hit capital of Leyte province, after a meeting last night with the governor of Leyte, local newspaper inquirer quoted regional police chief Elmer Soria as saying. Full story
China issues higher Typhoon alert as Haiyan nears
BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- A level three emergency response was issued Saturday to prevent damage from the approaching Typhoon Haiyan, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
The headquarters urged provinces of Hainan and Guangdong as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to keep a close eye on Haiyan and upgrade their precautions. Full story
