WHO doctor tested positive for Ebola to be evacuated from Sierra Leone

GENEVA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday confirmed a WHO doctor working in an Ebola treatment center in Sierra Leone has been tested positive for the disease and the doctor will be evacuated shortly.

WHO declined to disclose the doctor's nationality and age, but noted the doctor is currently in stable condition in Sierra Leone's capital city of Freetown. To ensure the safety of all, WHO said an investigation has already launched.

The Ebola treatment center is located in the country's south-eastern Kenema government hospital, which is run by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation. WHO's initial role in the facility was to offer guidance on setting up an Ebola treatment center, and to provide mentorship and direction to national staff until they could manage the facilities with local capacity.

While an urgent, thorough, on-site assessment has been initiated by WHO, three doctors will be moved to the clinic to continue oversight of patient care.

WHO highlighted healthcare workers are the backbone of the Ebola outbreak response and ensuring their safety is critical.
