KATHMANDU, Aug. 29 (Xinhua)-- A case of a couple who are staging fast-unto-death for more than a month has shaken the whole country after their health condition became critical.
Parents of Krishna Prasad Adhikari, who was killed by alleged Maoist during 10-year long insurgency, have been admitted at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bir Hospital, a government-owned hospital, after their health deteriorated due to the fast.
Nanda Prasad and Ganga Maya of Gorkha district has been staging fast demanding their son's killers be brought to book. All the top leaders, head of the government, right activist are urging to end the fast but the couple is refusing to end the fast. They have told the government and political parties that they will die but do not end the hunger strike until the murder of their soon is punished.
Rights groups are saying the government and UCPN (Maoist) will be responsible if anything unexpected happens to the couple. The UCPN (Maoist) is saying that the murder should not be booked by police as it is the war era case and it should be dealt through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Head of the interim election government Khilraj Regmi on Thursday met the couple and urged to end the fast but they denied. "As the government has started the investigation by urging them to end the hunger strike," Regmi said after the meeting.
Top leaders of major parties on Wednesday met and urged the couple to end the strike which also did not yield any positive outcomes.
The Adhikari couple accused the government of repeatedly breaching their trust by telling them that the investigation process has begun and that the culprits will be arrested soon.
Meanwhile, a group of conflict victims demonstrated in front of the hospital, demanding justice for the Adhikari couple and other conflict-era victims.
Nine organizations working for victims of the Maoist insurgency urged President Ram Baran Yadav to save the Adhikari couple's lives.
Though the government has said that it would arrest the people involved in the killing despite the protest from UCPN (Maoist), there has not been any progress yet.
