BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- A seven-year-old girl in Beijing who was the first person in China's capital to test positive for the H7N9 bird flu has started to recover, local health authorities said Monday.

The child, surnamed Yao, has been transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular ward in the infectious disease department of Beijing Ditan Hospital, according to the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau.

Over the past few days, the girl has been recovering and her temperature has stabilized, the bureau said, adding that she is no longer exhibiting respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms.

She has tested negative for the H7N9 virus twice and is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon, the bureau said.

On Monday morning, the bureau also said a four-year-old boy tested positive for the H7N9 virus by the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday evening.

He has not shown any flu-like symptoms and is not being included in the total number of confirmed cases nationwide, but he remains under medical observation at Beijing Ditan Hospital.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, 63 cases of the H7N9 strain of bird flu have been reported across China, including Beijing and Shanghai, the central province of Henan and the eastern provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui. Fourteen of the cases have resulted in death, according to local health authorities.
