PRAGUE, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Doctors from Prague's Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) have performed a unique heart replacing operation on a young man, with his heart replaced by two mechanical pumps, said Czech media reports.

"The man without a heart" is currently at IKEM's resuscitation ward. He is 37 years old and his heart had a malignant tumour.

The Czech team led by Professor Jan Pirk performed the eight-hour operation on April 3.

The man is the first patient in the world living with the help of two HeartMate II pumps. At present he can do everything except sport.

The same operation was previously conducted by heart surgeons in Texas, United States, but the patient died one week later.
