Iceland sees increase of foreign visitors' overnight stays in August

REYKJAVIK, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Iceland saw an increase of foreign tourists' overnight stays in hotels by 12 percent in August 2014, compared with the same period of previous year, figures indicated on Tuesday.

According to statistics issued by the Statistics Iceland, the total overnight stays in hotels in Iceland rose to 287,481 in August 2014, from 259,891 in August 2013, increasing by 11 percent.

Meanwhile, the nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 91 percent of the total overnight stays in August 2014, increasing by 12 percent when compared with the figure in August 2013. At the same time, the overnight stays of Icelanders decreased by 4 percent.

The number of overnight stays from September 2013 to August 2014 was 2,215,738, increasing by 13 percent when compared with the same period of previous year.

The nights spent by foreign tourists rose to 1,869,923 in the last 12 months from 1,641,921 nights of the previous year.
