MINSK, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The contact group on Ukraine agreed Tuesday on a scheme for withdrawal of heavy weapons, reaching a ceasefire deal, Belarusian Telegraph Agency (BelTA) reported.
Members of the contact group also discussed in the session the state structure of Ukraine's Donetsk region and the holding of local elections.
The meeting took place behind closed doors in the diplomatic service hall in downtown Minsk. Former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma, OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) special representative Heidi Tagliavini, Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov and representatives of the self-declared republics of Donetsk and Lugansk Denis Pushilin and Vladislav Deinego attended the talks.
The negotiations aim to help resolve the situation in Ukraine.
The meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine marked the start of a new round of consultations ahead of the much-anticipated Minsk summit in the so-called "Normandy format" which may take place here on Feb. 11.

Obama says U.S.-EU unity reinforced on Ukraine crisis
WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that the Ukraine crisis had reinforced unity of the United States and its European allies, although he did not rule out the possibility of providing lethal weapons to the Ukrainian forces, an act opposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"There maybe some areas where there are tactical disagreements, " said Obama at a joint press conference with Merkelin the White House, referring to the possible shift from U.S. policy of not arming Ukrainian forces. "Not just Ukraine, but the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty is one where we are completely unified." Full story
Mogherini says to hold off fresh sanctions over Ukraine until Feb. 16
BRUSSELS, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Monday confirmed that the EU foreign ministers have agreed to hold off fresh sanctions over Ukraine issue until next Monday.
"We discussed and adopted the list of additional names of 19 individuals and 9 entities, that will be subject to asset freeze and visa ban, as it was decided to be followed up in our last meeting 10 days ago," Mogherini told a press conference after a summit of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.Full Story
