LONDON, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on Wednesday condemned the recent bomb attacks in Yemen and reaffirmed Britain's support for its political transition.
Dozens of people were killed early Wednesday when a car bomb exploded outside the police academy in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, security officials and medics said.
"I condemn the appalling bomb attack today at the Police Academy in Sanaa, which has killed at least 30 police cadets and recruits and injured many more," Hammond said in a statement.
"It is deplorable that men who were training to help build a stronger and more secure Yemen should be killed in such a senseless way," he added.
Offering condolences to the families and friends of the victims, he said: "Such violence against civilian, political and security personnel is never justified."
"The UK stands with Yemen in its fight against extremism and we are working with the Yemeni government in support of the political transition," the foreign secretary noted.
He also urged that Yemen's newly-drafted constitution be "agreed as soon as possible, in line with the National Dialogue Outcomes."
Security situation in the impoverished Arab country has worsened since the Shiite militia controlled Sanaa on Sept. 21, 2014 by force.
