BANJUL, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Gambia will launch a campaign in Europe to assure tourists with first-hand information that the country is Ebola-free, Gambian officials said Tuesday.
The three-week activity will begin on Wednesday to attract more tourists from the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and other European countries, according to an official from the Gambia Tourism Board.
"We want to assure them that Gambia is not bordered with the Ebola affected countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, but only has a border with Senegal, which is also an Ebola-free country at the moment," the official said.
The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa has affected tourism in the region. Gambia, although Ebola-free, is hard hit in the low tourist season.
Data showed that 170,000 tourists were in Gambia for holiday during the winter season last year, but 60 percent of the tourists are not coming this year, which will affect the country's economy.
