BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Thanks to its phenomenal technical achievement, Gravity has been nominated for 10 Oscars this year, and its nomination for Best Visual Effects may be the most important.
According to Forbes, Gravity has become the third film in history to earn 100 million dollars worldwide in IMAX engagements alone.
The film takes place entirely in space and this resulted in an incredible amount of visual effects work that insiders say has never been done or seen before.
In terms of technology, director Alfonso Cuarón, using all-too-real effects and 3-D with a nearly poetic simplicity and command, places the audience right up there in space along with the astronauts and makes them begin to understand what being weightless must feel like.
Cuarón revealed during the film’s promotion that it took six years’ work to create each beautifully crafted shot in Gravity, citing its incredible wire work and visual effects for the extended shoot.
The general consensus is that, if Gravity does not receive the Best Picture Oscar, it would signal to Cuarón that innovation is not tolerated.
