"Ride Along" debuts top the North American box office

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- This week's debut, Universal's "Ride Along" took the first place of the weekend's North American box office.

For a second consecutive weekend, Universal saw "Ride Along" break out in a big way, with an estimated 41.2 million U.S. dollars at 2,663 locations, leading the three-day frame.

"Ride Along" set new three-day opening weekend records for both Martin Luther King Day weekend and the month of January as a whole. The official four-day estimate for "Ride Along" is about 47.8 million dollars.

"Ride Along" got an "A" from CinemaScore and an as low as 16 percent "fresh" ranking.

Universal also claimed second place over the three-day frame, as "Lone Survivor" took in an estimated 23.2 million dollars, with a solid 39 percent descend.

"Lone Survivor" has grossed 74 million dollars in north America since it released in a small scale on Christmas. The official four- day estimate for "Lone Survivor" stands at 27.6 million dollars.

Open Road's 3D animation "The Nut Job" was the weekend's biggest surprise, which opened in third over the three-day frame with an estimated 20.55 million dollars.

First night moviegoers ranked the film a "B" on CinemaScore, and Rotten Tomatoes only gave it 13 percent "fresh" scored.

With an official four-day estimate of 27.2 million dollars, " The Nut Job" is within shouting distance of "Lone Survivor", a 73 percent "fresh" and "A+" movie.

Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" (17.2 million dollars), "Frozen" (12 million), "American Hustle" ( 10.6 million), "Devil's Due" (8.5 million), "August: Osage County" (7.6 million), "The Wolf of Wall Street" (7.5 million) and "Saving Mr. Banks" (4.1 million).
