BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- More from Hollywood now where the American Television Academy has hosted An Evening with "Sons of Anarchy", a critically acclaimed TV drama. After winning a Golden Globe award this motorcycle club drama has entered its penultimate season with the producer’s making the show darker than before. CCTV correspondent Jonathan Shupack had a chance to chat with the cast and creative team.
Sons of Anarchy is about an international outlaw motorcycle club in the tiny American town called Charming. The show focuses on the original and founding members, their families and other various Charming townspeople.
The show revolves around the conflict between two generations of club leaders. Kurt Sutter, the show’s creator and executive producer, told us that the story was inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Jurt Sutter, Exe. Porducer of "Sons of Anarchy", said, "There are a lot of themes that are similar and I think there’s an epic quality that this show has – a bigness that I think honors that genre, you know, so that’s sort of more what we tend to do. But I don’t necessarily think of it in terms of in forming story as much as themes, revenge and the dynamic between a son and a mother and a son and a father and things like that."
As masculine, brutal and violent as the show’s visuals might deliver, it also has a soft and romantic story line between the protagonist Jax and his wife Tara Teller, played by actress Maggie Siff. In the previous 4 seasons, Tara served as a moral compass when criminal activities dominated the motorcycle club. However, as the story gets more complicated, it also thinned the line between good and evil.
Tara Teller, Actress of "Sons of Anarchy", said, "I think she has been along the way. I think that’s a harder title to give her these days. I think her morality has been skewed by the world that she’s in and I think she’s had to sort of play by a different rule book especially recently. But I – ultimately, I think her head is on a little bit straighter than some of the other people in the show."
Since Jax and Tara’s relationship has been challenged by prisons, separations and death threats, we had to ask, will they have a happy ending?
"I hope so, but, I don’t know. Things go south a lot on this show. I’m holding out hope." Tara said.
The other female lead on the show is Golden Globe winning actress Katey Sagal. She plays Gemma Morrow, Jax’s force-of-nature mother and the matriarch of the club. And after so many seasons on the show Katey told us that she has no problems separating her character with her real life.
Katey Sagal, Actress of "Sons of Anarchy", said, "You know, your job is your job and then your life is your life. So, I’m really clear about that. There’s definitely days where – I just had a couple of days which were very emotional and it was hard to shake. I found myself a bit weepy for another couple of days. But that’s rare, I mean, usually I’m able to do my job and go and have my life."
Apart from all the colourful characters, the other stand-out cast members are the customized Harley-Davidson motorcycles. They may be beautiful on the show, but off screen, executive producer Paris Barclay has a very good reason why he doesn’t ride a motorcycle.
"Because I was once on a Harley Davidson when I was 17-years-old and I went through a plate glass window and I haven’t been on once since. I do like watching them go by but I will not get on them. There’s a reason they call them donor cycles." Paris Barclay, Exe. Producer/Director, said.
