SARAJEVO, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- To be a actor means a lot of responsibilities, and you have to do a lot of study and homework, said Hollywood star Armand Assante on Thursday.
During an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Assante said one must love story-telling and theatre performance to be a real actor.
"If you are interesting in being an actor, you must spend much time in theatre, in live performance," he said, "You must work with the author. The main role for an actor is to tell a story."
"It is a moral obligation (for actors)...... If you do not love story or story-telling, there is no point (to become an actor)" Assante noted. For those young people with an aim to embark on a career as actors, they must work very hard, he added.
The Hollywood celebrity, which came to Sarajevo as a special guest for the ongoing 19th Sarajevo Film Festival, recalled he read "a library of books" about Napoleon Bonaparte before he played the legendary French strongman in the movie "Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story".
Assante, who is known to play bad guys in movies, jokingly said it is one of "great downfalls" for him to play different roles in movies.
The Hollywood actor, who has Italian and Irish blood in him, said he always feels lucky to live in New York. "I live in a liberal environment. In New York, I was exposed to every culture in the world right in my neighborhood."
Chinese movies gave him a deep impression, said Assante, adding that he knows some famous names in Chinese film circles, including Gong Li, a famous actress.
He looked forward to future cooperation with Chinese film makers, "I would love to do great stories about China".
