"Identity Thief" snatches top place at North America box office

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy have shown their star power again as "Identity Thief" regained No. 1 in North America box office sales, besting a pair of new releases and fellow holdouts.

The break-out comedy, distributed by Universal Pictures, is on pace to rake up 14 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales over the weekend. Its 17-day total will reach 93.7 million dollars, which makes it possible to be the first movie to smash the 100 million dollar mark since the start of the year.

Debuting in No. 2 is "Snitch," a Dwayne Johnson vehicle which is estimated to roll up 13 million dollars during Friday-Sunday frame. The crime drama from Lionsgate and Summit received a mixed reviews from critics, as it garnered a 55 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The film is male-skewing as men made up 53 percent of the audience, and 58 percent was younger than 30 years old.

"Escape From Planet Earth," in theaters for the second weekend, will rake in 11 million dollars as No. 3. The Weinstein Co.'s 3-D computer animated action-comedy is on track to gross 35.1 million dollars during 10 days in exhibition.

Rounding out the 10 most popular films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend were "Safe Haven" (USD10.6 million), "A Good Day To Die Hard" (10 million), "Dark Skies" (debuting at 8.9 million), " Silver Linings Playbook" (6.1 million), "Warm Bodies" (4.8 million) , "Side Effects" (3.5 million), and "Beautiful Creatures" (3.4 million).
