SINGAPORE, Aug. 22 (Xinhua)-- A huge chocolate fountain, floating cotton candy, edible lilies and a fantastic chocolate zoo ... This is like a scene in Johnny Depp's movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," but it is a reality in the city-state.
From Aug. 22 to 24, visitors can walk into the fairy tale of confection and have a bite of dream at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre in Singapore.
Dubbed "Fantasa by Escrib", it is the world's first confectionery theatre extravaganza by pastry power couple, Christian Escriba and Patricia Schmidt. The extravaganza features dazzling theatrical showcases, towering masterpieces made from confectionery and an array of delectable sweet and savoury treats.
Christian Escriba, whose father is regarded as the "Magician of Chocolate," is the fourth generation of the famous family-owned pastry boutique Pasteleria Escriba in Barclona, Spain. His most illustrious clientele include the late Pope John Paul II, American rock star Bruce Springsteen and actress Demi Moore. He has also worked in collaboration with global powerhouse brands, producing signature confection items for Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chopard, Chanel, BMW and Tiffany.
Apprenticing with his grandfather in Paris from the age of 16, Escrib further amplified his culinary talents into a huge fairy tale world. To him, "Fantasa by Escrib" is just like a dream come true.
"For all my life, I have been wanting to do this," he said, "I have lots of ideas, and every night, I put all of them down on a piece of paper...and with the help of my wife, we have made Fantas a by Escrib," Escriba said.
The whole theatre is just like a wonderland. Chefs walk in the air with iridescent candies, and the chocolate zoo keeps life-size safari animals such as zebra, elephant, gorilla, all made of confection. Visitors are entertained by theatrical performances and emotive displays, delicate sugar flowers, trendy high-heels and even a group of cupids who can't wait to send you love messages.
All the chocolate used to make the fabulous world came from Spain. And to deliver the "animals" and huge confectionery creatures -- some of which are as high as five meters tall -- were "extremely difficult," according to Escriba himself.
"Some of them we brought by ship, some of them were air- freighted," he said. "We brought them piece by piece, and here in Singapore, we replicated them."
Escrib said it took 15 chefs and more than four months to complete all the masterpieces. And during the exhibition, visitors also have a chance to taste over 15 kinds of freshly-made pastries, some of which will give people great fun while tasting.
This is the first time Fantasa by Escrib exhibits outside of Spain. "Singapore is the stage for the premiere of Escrib Asia, and Fantasa by Escrib is a showcase of what we can do and what we will bring to the region," Escriba said.
Paul Wakefield, executive chairman and co-founder of Fantasa by Escrib Asia, explained the reason why the city-state was chosen to host the event.
"As we roll out the Escrib brand with its rich heritage, incredible events and a world-class academy, Singapore provides us with the best location for this world-first event."
