CHENGDU, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Sichuan University and University of Pittsburgh, one of the United States's oldest colleges, have begun constructing a joint institute for undergraduate education.
When opened it will be the first sino-foreign educational facility in Sichuan Province. It won approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education on Feb. 29.
The Sichuan University Pittsburgh Institute is expected to recruit 100 students next year with three majors, including industrial engineering,
mechanical design, manufacturing and automation as well as materials science and engineering, said Xie Heping, president of Sichuan University.
Within seven years, enrollment is projected to grow to 1,600, he said.
The first students will graduate in 2019. Students can choose to study in the University of Pittsburgh in their third and fourth years and graduate with degrees from both universities.
Sichuan University is a prestigious Chinese education facility based in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. University of Pittsburgh, built in 1787, is one of the oldest comprehensive universities in America.
U.S. top universities, including Duke University and New York University, have begun to tap into the Chinese market by establishing overseas campuses.
