BARCELONA, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The Model United Nations of Barcelona, an authentic simulation of specific organs of the UN, is being held here from April 29 to May 2 and has attracted some 280 students from 40 different universities.
Angels Mataro i Pau, director of the United Nations Association of Spain, gave the figures during an interview with Xinhua.
Mataro, whose association has been organizing the Model for nine years, said the conference is a tool for cultural exchange.
The Model United Nations consists of a simulation of different UN bodies where countries and organizations are represented by students or young professionals in order to discuss current topics of international politics. They will write resolutions at the end of the debates that will be sent to the "real" UN.
"The Model does not only contributes to academic issues and job training, but it contributes greatly to the students' personal enrichment", Mataro said.
This year the UN Model includes the simulation of six UN bodies, such as the Security Council and UN Women, among others.
Mataro described the event a "great exchange of ideas" of students from different universities around the world.
She said that the importance of the Model UN is that it allows students to "put themselves in others' shoes when they discuss issues of international politics, while promoting dialogue within the debate as opposed to arguments."
