Variety show staged in Houston to celebrate Chinese lunar new year

HOUSTON, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- A variety show featuring Chinese music, dances and other traditional arts was staged in the U.S. city of Houston Saturday to celebrate the Chinese lunar new year.

Though it was held one day after the traditional Lantern Festival, which usually marks the end of the lunar new year celebration, the show still drew around 1,000 overseas Chinese as well as natives in the fourth largest city of the United States.

The multi-art performance party, which engaged some 300 performers and stage crew members, presented to the audiences a dozen Chinese songs, dances, stand-up comedies and musical instrument performances at the Belin Hall of Houston Baptist University.

The appearance of "Brother Cui," a stand-up comedian who made his name known in China's social media Weibo, was the highlight of the show, during which spectators lavished the short, stout man capped in a cowboy hat with incessant applause and laughter.

Launched in 2013 by the Chinese Civic Center in Houston, the themed show "Embracing Spring" aims to become an annual celebration for hundreds of thousands of Chinese Americans living in Houston, said Zhang Yiqin, honorary chairwoman of the organizing committee of the show.

Chinese Consul General in Houston Xu Erwen also attended the show and hoped that the celebration, which combined both ancient and modern Chinese arts, will help promote Chinese culture and enhance the China-U.S. friendship.
