TASHKENT, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek people Tuesday celebrated Nowruz, a major holiday of the Central Asian nation to welcome the arrival of spring.
President Islam Karimov attended festivities at Alisher Navoi national park and sent holiday greetings to the nation.
Nowruz celebrates the start of agricultural activities and warm days and it is observed by many countries in the Middle East and Central Asia.
The holiday was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in September 2009. The UN General Assembly passed a resolution in February 2010 to declare March 21 as the International Nowruz Day.
