ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Europa Nostra Federation has presented a Russian village an award for the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage, local authorities said.
The award, announced in Lisbon, was presented to the Haykolya village in Russia's Republic of Karelia, said the republic's Ministry of Culture.
The village is the birthplace of Karelian writer Ortjo Stepanova. In recent years, with the support of funds "Yuminkeko" and "Fund Ortjo Stepanov," three houses were built on traditional technology in the village.
Heritage sites in 10 other European countries also received the award, the highest recognition in Europe for cultural heritage preservation. In total, 226 heritage sites from 31 European countries applied for it.
The Europa Nostra Federation, founded in 1963, presents annually starting in 2002 awards to recognize and promote best practices in heritage conservation in Europe.
It operates in 45 countries and has built a network of more than 400 members and associate organizations from all over Europe.
