BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhuanet) -- An ice theme park that opened in Qingpu District, Shanghai just two weeks ago has been ordered to close as it doesn’t have the required licenses, authorities said yesterday.
Indoor attraction Ice Town opened on July 4, complete with illuminated ice sculptures, ice slides and penguins.
But it opened before the operator had the obtained fire control and safety contingency plan licenses, Qingpu police said.
Ice Town was asked to suspend operations while it rectifies this, said Zhou Min, an official with the Qingpu District government.
It is not known yet whether it will reopen, added the official.
But Ice Town operator Shanghai Qianyuanyutian Culture Co said it is currently upgrading facilities at the 8,000-square-meter attraction for a more fun experience and promised that it will open again soon.
Shanghai Qianyuanyutian’s managing director Zhang Dongsong, said the company applied for licenses from police and fire control authorities in March and expects to have these next week.
Zhang said some extra procedures in application were required by authorities.
“We plan to reopen next weekend,” Zhang said.
Ice Town was scheduled to open from July 4 to October 7 at Mega Mills shopping destination, according to the original plan.
Online ticketing website gewara.com suspended ticket sales yesterday. These had cost 120 yuan (US$19.3) at weekends and 80 yuan for working day.
Ice Town rolled into Shanghai for the first time last winter last year, with a three-month stint in the Pudong New Area.
This attracted more than 10,000 visitors during its three-month operation between December and February.
