TAIPEI, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) won 17 council speaker seats from 22 municipalities and counties, turning the tables after a big loss in the island's local elections on Nov. 29.
The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) only landed 3 speakers' positions, with independent council members taking the remaining two.
The elections were held on Thursday, the day new local administrations took office across Taiwan.
Tsai Ing-wen, chairwoman of the DPP, said on Friday in a Facebook post that she regretted the results and made apology to all supporters.
In the Nov. 29 local elections, the KMT won six county and city chiefs' seats while the DPP snatched up 13 seats, with independent candidates taking the other three.
