BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Friday commented on the decision to demarcate the sea zones of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), saying it will boost development of the SAR.
"The decision can help fully implement 'one country, two systems' policy and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR," said the spokesperson of Hong Kong and Macao affairs office of the State Council, adding it will help promote moderate diversification in Macao's economy and boost cooperation between Macao and neighboring Guangdong Province.
The spokesperson said the central government and local government agencies will help Macao SAR complete demarcation before the end of 2015.
The decision was announced Friday by President Xi Jinping at a meeting with Macao SAR chief executive Chui Sai On. Xi will attend a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland on Saturday.
Currently there is no clear demarcation of sea zones between Macao and the mainland's Guangdong, and sometimes overlapping jurisdiction has caused problems in fighting crime at sea and navigation safety.
