TAIPEI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Mayor of the New Taipei City Eric Chu announced Friday that he will run for the Kuomintang (KMT) chairmanship next January but will not compete in the 2016 race for Taiwan leader.
Chu made the announcement in a post on his Facebook account.
"When the KMT faces its most grimm time, I can't just walk away from the party. Instead I must run for party chief in a bid to carry out sweeping and profound reform and revive the spirit of the party," he said in the post.
Zhu, who won the mayoral seat in Taiwan's biggest ever local elections on Nov. 29, said he will serve his full term of four years as the mayor of the New Taipei City.
Taiwan's ruling KMT announced Wednesday elections for a new chairperson on Jan. 17.
Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou stepped down as the chairman on Dec. 3, handing over to the party's First Vice Chairman Wu Den-yih as interim chief.
