China serious about tackling climate change: FM spokesman

English.news.cn   2014-11-13 19:51:21

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China has firm determination and a serious attitude toward tackling climate change, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Thursday.

China and the United States issued a joint announcement on climate change Wednesday, listing ambitious goals and pledging joint efforts to tackle climate change in the next 15 years.

The United States intends to achieve an economy-wide target of reducing emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025, according to the announcement.

China's carbon dioxide emissions are expected to hit a peak around 2030, and the country intends to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in its primary energy consumption to around 20 percent by 2030, according to the announcement.

Hong said both countries have announced action goals and decided to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" to jointly cope with climate change. They also pledged to enhance dialogue on their respective domestic policies, the spokesman said.

Tackling climate change requires international cooperation and China is calling on developed countries to shoulder their responsibilities, Hong said.

China is willing to make joint efforts with other countries to cope with climate change and promote a new agreement in 2015.

The 2015 agreement, set to be reached at the Paris conference next year, is aimed at finalizing a new global climate change pact.
