CARACAS, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan Vice President Jorge Arreaza Tuesday congratulated the national athletes who have won medals at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
Via Twitter, Arreaza spotlighted the performances of swimmer Carlos Claverie and judoka Elvismar Rodriguez for winning bronze medals in their respective sports.
"Congratulations to our young countrymen Carlos Claverie and Elvismar (for their) bronze medals at Nanjing 2014," Arreaza posted.
Rodriguez, 17, took third place after defeating France's Morgane Duchene in the 78-kilo division, while Claverie won the bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Venezuela sent 54 athletes to compete in 15 different sports at the games, which began on Saturday and continue through Aug. 28.
In a separate message, Arreaza also congratulated the women's basketball team for winning bronze at the South American Championship in Ecuador, after defeating Chile 72 to 54, and qualifying for the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto, Canada.
