BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to harshly crack down on drug-related crimes and to contain the spread of drugs.
In a written instruction made public on Wednesday ahead of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which falls on June 26, Xi called on authorities to be aware of the danger of drugs and adopt forceful measures to wipe them out.
China still faces a grave situation in drug control, Xi wrote, adding that drug taking, trafficking, planting and manufacturing should all be targeted amid comprehensive measures to control drugs.
Premier Li Keqiang, who wrote an instruction to drug control authorities recently, also underscored the importance of controlling drugs, which he labeled a "common enemy to humanity."
Li called for high attention in drug control, and urged practical international cooperation to contain the spread of drugs.
China sentences more drug criminals
BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese courts sentenced 39,762 criminals for drug offenses in the first five months of 2014, up 27.8 percent year on year, the Supreme People's Court (SPC) announced on Wednesday.
Over 9,000 were sentenced to more than five years imprisonment or death, said Ma Yan, a deputy presiding judge with the SPC.Full Story
Drug gang busted in E China
NANJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- A drug gang operating across several Chinese provinces has been busted in east China's Jiangsu Province, local police announced on Tuesday.
Police in Jiangsu's Xuzhou City said they have apprehended 11 suspects for drug manufacturing and dealing, also seizing 6 kg of methamphetamine, 5 million yuan (800,000 U.S. dollars) and equipment for drug manufacturing.Full Story
China's cross-border drug fight producing results
NANNING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Police in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have seized more than 103 kilograms of drugs since the beginning of 2013.
Guangxi has cracked more than 500 cases and smashed several drug trafficking networks involving neighboring Vietnam over the past 18 months, according to the border defense force under the regional public security department.Full Story
