BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Two students who were badly injured while tackling a knife-wielding attacker on a bus in east China’s Jiangxi Province on May 31 will be allowed to sit the college entrance exam once they have recovered.
Liu Yanbing and Yi Zhengyong, both 17, feared they had missed their chance to take the exam after being admitted to hospital in Yichun after the incident.
But yesterday the Ministry of Education said that an exception will be made due to the pair’s heroics.
Liu and Yi were traveling on a bus when a fellow passenger suddenly took out a knife and began slashing at people with it.
Five people, including Liu and Yi, were injured, but the young men fought back and eventually managed to overcome their assailant and wrest his weapon.
The attacker is now in police custody.
Liu sustained a serious wound to his head and cuts to his arms, while Yi was stabbed in his back and left arm, according to a CCTV report.
After learning that the boys were set to miss the entrance exam due to their injuries, the Ministry of Education told officials from Jiangxi to make arrangements for them to take a separate test once they are fit enough to do so.
In recognition of their valor, Nanchang University has offered Liu and Yi places even before they sit the exam, the People’s Daily reported.
The two boys are not the first to be rewarded for their good deeds.
In 2008, four students from Sichuan Province were offered university places in recognition of their efforts in helping victims of the Wenchuan earthquake.
