KIEV, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping's special envoy, Cai Wu, attended the inauguration ceremony of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Saturday.
In a brief conversation with the Ukrainian leader, Cai passed on Xi's warm congratulations.
He said that China highly values its strategic partnership with Ukraine and is willing to promote the sound and steady development of China-Ukraine relations on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.
Poroshenko said the relations between Ukraine and China have been developing smoothly, with fruitful results yielded in various fields of cooperation.
He invited Chinese leaders to his country at any time convenient for them.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk met Cai, who is Chinese cultural minister, later Saturday. Speaking highly of the bilateral ties, the two sides expressed willingness to work together to further strengthen the traditional friendship between the two countries and advance practical cooperation in various fields.

Ukraine's new leadership to deepen China cooperation
BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's ambassador to China vowed on Friday that the European country's cooperation with China will be deepened following its election of a new president and its continuance of a friendly policy toward China.
The Ukraine-China partnership has developed quickly, said Oleg Dyomin, citing the signing of a cooperation treaty and the approval last year of a plan to deepen the two nations' strategic partnership from 2014 to 2018. Full story
Poroshenko sworn in as new Ukrainian president
KIEV, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Petro Poroshenko was sworn in on Saturday as the fifth Ukrainian president at an inauguration ceremony in Kiev.
The ceremony in the Ukrainian parliament building, which was attended by dozens of foreign dignitaries, began with the National Ukrainian anthem and followed by shouting "Glory to Ukraine." Full story

PARIS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius said on Friday the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with Ukrainian President-elect Petero Poroshenko on the sidelines of D-Day landings ceremony was "important" for "reaching a ceasefire" in Ukraine.
"All work was done to ensure that the Russian and Ukrainian presidents meet and talk together. It's an important contact," Fabius said. "The aim is to reach rapidly a ceasefire that could prompt many other things." Full story
