BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- About three quarters of prospective students taking the annual national college entrance exam this year will gain admission, the Ministry of Education announced on Friday.
A total of 9.39 million people have registered for the exam to vie for 6.98 million vacancies in universities and colleges. Last year's admission rate was just over 75 percent.
The number of candidates from rural areas has increased by 260,000 this year, thanks to a set of encouraging government policies.
This year, universities will each reserve an extra enrollment quota of 8,500 for rural students, the ministry said in a statement last week.
The exam, known as the "gaokao", will take place on June 7 and 8 this year.
