Xi leads China's military reform, stressing building of strong army

BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is head of a leading group for deepening reform on national defense and the military, on Saturday stressed the country's military reform should be guided by the objective of building a strong army.

Xi, also chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks during the first plenary meeting of the group under the CMC.

CMC vice chairmen Fan Changlong and Xu Qiliang serve as the leading group's deputy heads.

Xi vows no compromise on national interests

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged the country's armed forces to courageously assume their responsibility in safeguarding national sovereignty and interests.

 "We expect peace, but we shall never give up efforts to maintain our legitimate rights, nor shall we compromise our core interests, no matter when or in what circumstances," Xi said while joining a plenary meeting of the People's Liberation Army delegation at the ongoing legislative session. BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Vice premier Zhang Gaoli on Friday called for army staff and the people to come closer together and pool more strength to advance national defense and economic development.

Zhang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks at a tea party gathering both military staff and common citizens. Full story

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese military officials on Thursday called on thePeople's Liberation Army(PLA) to carry out the "mass line" campaign to build a strong military.

During a PLA conference on the second phase of the campaign, Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), urged efforts to ensure the campaign reaches every corner of the military and thorough implementation of requirements to root out bad workstyles. Full story
