Taiwan's Tsai Ing-wen announces bid for DPP chairperson

English.news.cn   2014-03-15 14:19:06

TAIPEI, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Tsai Ing-wen, former chairwoman of Taiwan's main opposition party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP),announced on Saturday her decision to run for party chief again.

Tsai said in a statement that the DPP needs to win back people's trust and expectations, rather than building on their disappointment in the ruling Kuomintang party.

Tsai's entry made her the third hopeful in the party chief election scheduled for May 25.

Previously, the incumbent Su Tseng-chang has expressed his intention to run for re-election. Another DPP heavyweight, Hsieh Chang-ting, has also announced a bid for the position.

Tsai stepped down as DPP party chief in 2012 after losing to Ma Ying-jeou in the Taiwan leadership election that year.
