BEIJING, Mar. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Political advisors proposed that China take various measures, including building more forest belts and nuclear power plants, to curb smog.

Yang Zhongqi, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and also director of the Key Lab on Forest Protection under the State Forestry Administration, stressed the importance of controlling smog through science and technology on the sidelines of the ongoing annual sessions of the country's top political advisory body.

Yang said, "China needs to enhance its scientific research in smog control, apart from merely cutting the pollution from emissions, coal and vehicle use."

According to Yang, a forest belt can be created to form an ecological draughty corridor to help blow out the smog.

He Yu, a CPPCC member and president of China General Nuclear Power Group, said nuclear power too has a substantial effect on curbing air pollution.

He said, "What the energy field can do in the battle against air pollution includes controlling coal consumption, using natural gas and promoting the development of alternative-energy sectors which involves nuclear power and renewable energy resources."

"Smog is not formed all of a sudden. It’s the result of our pursuing fast economic growth over the past years." Diana Fung, a CPPCC member and director of the OSJ Hong Kong Children Amblyopia Foundation, said. "We should pay attention to long-term development and stop scarifying the environment for rapid growth."
