Chinese research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, has been trapped in heavy ice after successfully evacuating 52 passengers who had been trapped on the Russian vessel MV Akademik Shokalskiy since Christmas Eve.  President Xi Jinping has requested all-out efforts to ensure the safety of the staff aboard, adding the rescue mission has won honor for China and the people. Xuelong warmed up its engine and tried to broaden an "ice-breaking runway" on Monday, preparing for a possible westerly wind favorable for its breaking-out.

 

 

 China's trapped icebreaker makes successful escape

ABOARD XUELONG, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Trapped Chinese research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong made a successful escape through heavy sea ice at 18:30 Beijing time (1030 GMT) Tuesday.

Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, has been making consistent efforts to "veer around" the whole day while navigating through thick floes. Full story

 

 China's trapped icebreaker preparing for breakout amid uncertain conditions

ABOARD XUELONG, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Trapped Chinese research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong warmed up its engine and tried to broaden an "ice-breaking runway" on Monday, preparing for a possible westerly wind favorable for its breaking-out.

However, interrupted by an unfavorable southeast wind and a decreasing tide, the broadening only lasted for forty or fifty meters, a Xinhua correspondent aboard the vessel reported. Full story

U.S. icebreaker Polar Star to help vessels trapped in Antarctica: AMSA

SYDNEY, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has requested the U.S. Coast Guard's icebreaker Polar Star to assist the Russian vessel MV Akademik Shokalskiy and the Chinese vessel Xue Long (Snow Dragon)which are stuck by ice in Antarctica.

AMSA has identified the Polar Star as a vessel capable of assisting the trapped vessels. Full story

Scientific researches undisturbed on stranded Chinese icebreaker in Antarctic

ABOARD XUELONG, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Scientists aboard Chinese icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, continued their researches in Antarctic on Sunday with even greater passion after the vessel was trapped by heavy floes a day earlier.

The icebreaker found it unable to move in an area of thick ice on Saturday, some 21 km away from the nearest ice-free waters, two days after ferrying all passengers aboard a stranded Russian ship to an Australian icebreaker. Full story

Xi requests safety of staff aboard stranded icebreaker

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- President Xi Jinping has requested all-out efforts to ensure the safety of the staff aboard the research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong, which is trapped in heavy ice after its rescue of passengers on a Russian vessel stranded in Antarctica.

Xuelong's rescue mission had been accomplished under extreme risks and has won honor for China and the people, Xi said. He expressed regards and greetings to the 101-member expedition team, and ordered coordinated efforts to help them out of trouble and ensure their safety. Full story

Chinese helicopter lifts all passengers on trapped Russian ship to safety

ABOARD XUELONG, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese helicopter transferred all 52 passengers aboard a stranded Russian vessel to safe ice near an Australian rescue ship on Thursday, 10 days after the MV Akademik Shokalskiy became stuck in sea ice off Antarctica.

The passengers, as well as luggage, scientific instruments and equipment, were flown to safe ice near the Aurora Australis by Xueying 12, a helicopter on board China's icebreaker Xuelong, and are aboard the Australian ship. An earlier flight examined the surrounding area to prepare for landing on ice. Full story

Chinese helicopter to airlift passengers on stranded Russian ship in Antarctica

ABOARD XUELONG, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese helicopter Xueying (Snow Eagle) on board the icebreaker Xuelong has been prepared for the airlift of trapped passengers on a Russian vessel stuck in sea ice off Antarctica, Xueying captain Jia Shuliang told Xinhua on Wednesday.

"The crew members have been readied to transport the 52 scientists and tourists aboard MV Akademik Shokalskiy with their luggage to Xuelong in groups of 12," Jia said. Full story

Chinese icebreaker awaits better weather to rescue Russian ship in Antarctic

ABOARD XUELONG, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, on way to rescue a Russian science ship trapped off Antarctica, has stalled itself since midnight Friday after getting stuck in thick ice only 6.1 nautical miles away from the Russian ship.

"Since the thick ice exceeds the ship's icebreaking capabilities and an upcoming cyclone will exacerbate icy conditions, we have to temporarily stall the ship," said Wang Jianzhong, captain of Xuelong. Full story

China expands research bases in Antarctica

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- China is expanding its presence at the South Pole, with construction workers leaving its Zhongshan Station on Wednesday to build the Taishan summer field camp, the country's fourth Antarctic base.

Site inspections for another research station will also be carried out at Antarctica's Victoria Land during a 155-day expedition launched on Nov 7. Full story
