China coast guard patrols Diaoyu Islands

BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Four China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels patrolled territorial waters surrounding the Diaoyu Islands on Sunday, according to the State Oceanic Administration.

The administration identified the four vessels as CCG 2337, 2102, 2112 and 2151.

Japan told to stop Diaoyu Islands provocation

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Japan should immediately stop all of its provocative actions over the Diaoyu Islands, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman told a regular press briefing Thursday.

Hong Lei was commenting on an Internet video clip posted on the Japanese Foreign Ministry's website. The clip promoted the Diaoyu Islands as Japanese territory. Full story

China watches for Japan's security, defense plans

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China is watching closely Japan's security strategy and latest defense plan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Japan released drafts of its first national security strategy and a long-term defense guideline, which promised to "respond calmly and resolutely to the rapid expansion and step-up of China's maritime and air activities." Full story

China upset with Japanese diplomat's remarks

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday expressed strong dissatisfaction over remarks made by a Japanese diplomat who said China is "a militarist country."

Hidehisa Horinouchi, minister at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, said if China criticized Japan for passing a secrecy law as it would cause militarism, then China had already become a militarist country itself, according to media reports. Full story

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China stands ready to promote the creation of a harmonious ocean together with other nations, said a Chinese envoy to the UN on Monday.

"Issues related to oceans and the law of the sea have attracted more attention from the international society this year," said Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, at a UN General Assembly meeting on Oceans and the Law of the Sea. Full story
