The world has stepped into the era of digital multi-media, the media pattern and communication environment are undergoing profound changes, and the audience demands are increasingly diversified. The traditional media are facing major challenges as well as unprecedented opportunities. “Dealing with Severe Challenges and Winning Development Opportunities” is the common concern of the global media.
During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, President of Xinhua News Agency Mr. Li Congjun respectively held working talks with the leaders of the global major media such as News Corporation, The Associated Press, REUTERS, Kyodo News, BBC, etc., exchanging the views on the challenges of the digital multi-media era, enhancement of exchange, cooperation and win-win, etc. All the parties reached consensus that it is necessary to hold the World Media Summit, which builds an efficient platform for the global media to communicate with each other and pool collective wisdom, sparking their thoughts and wisdoms, discussing survival and development, and talking about cooperation and future.
From 8 to 10 October 2009, the World Media Summit was successfully held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This summit was jointly initiated by nine global leading media organizations in the world - Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, The Associated Press, REUTERS, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo News, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System and Google Inc., and organized by Xinhua News Agency, which absorbed the leaders of more than 170 media organizations from across the world. This summit was an “Olympic Games” of the world media with the world’s largest scale and widest coverage area, covering all media types, such as news agency, newspaper, broadcasting, television, internet, etc.
President Hu Jintao also attended and addressed at the opening ceremony of the summit, which impressed the media representatives, caused profound impact on the world opinion and greatly highlighted the significance of the summit. This summit issued the significant World Media Summit Joint Declaration.
On July 5, 2012, the Second Session of World Media Summit was held in Moscow. This summit drew more than 300 representatives from 213 international media outlets out of 102 countries. Under the theme of “Global Media: Meeting Challenges of the 21st Century”, the three-day summit discussed some realistic issues such as the development of electronic media, the impact of social network on contemporary media space, relationship between media and business sector, press ethics, etc.
So far, the multi-lateral coordination mechanism of the global media industry under the mechanism of the summit has been formed initially, and increasingly plays an important role.
