MACAO, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The preliminary estimate of the Macao foreign exchange reserves amounted to 131.4 billion patacas (16.45 billion U.S. dollars) at the end of August, according to the figures released on Friday by the Monetary Authority of Macao.
The reserves for August rose by 2.1 percent over the previous month. Compared with the figures a year earlier, the reserves dropped by 1.8 billion patacas (225.36 million U.S. dollars) or 1.4 percent, the figures indicated.
Macao's foreign exchange reserves at the end of August represented 16 times the currency in circulation at the end of July.
The trade-weighted effective exchange rate index for the pataca, a gauge of the domestic currency's exchange rates against the currencies of Macao's major trading partners, fell by 0.73 points month-to-month and 1.29 points year-on-year to 97.56 in August.
