CHENGDU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 58 people died and 175 others were missing in rainstorm-triggered floods and a major geological disaster last week in southwest China's Sichuan Province, said the Sichuan provincial government on Tuesday.
PLA helicopters help flood-hit SW China
CHENGDU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chengdu Military Area Command has dispatched helicopters to help with relief work in Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province which has been affected by flooding.
An aviation unit dispatched three helicopters with 19 relief workers and 7.5 tonnes of materials in 12 flights to Caopo Township of Wenchuan County, which suffered downpours and mud-rock flows, according to the area command. Full story
Sichuan rainfall to reach peak on Wednesday, Thursday
BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- A new round of torrential rain has hit southwest China's Sichuan province. The rainfall is expected to further increase and reach this year's peak on Wednesday and Thursday.
In Beichuan county, a 300-meter long river bank was washed away. Many parts of the road linking Chengdu with Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong Temple have collapsed. Relief workers have built a temporary access road, which can only be used by small vehicles. Full story
Barrier lake threatens residents in SW China
CHENGDU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Workers began to remove a dangerous barrier lake which was formed after a landslide and continuous rainfall, threatening residents downstream in southwest China's Sichuan Province, local authorities said Tuesday.
The barrier lake is 3 kilometers away from a hydropower plant under construction in Sanjiao Township, Hanyuan County. Full story
