New weather stations to monitor Lhasa's road conditions

English.news.cn   2013-01-07 15:47:27

LHASA, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Three new weather stations will be built to observe local road conditions, an official with the meteorological bureau of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region said Monday.

The stations will be built along highway sections in Lhasa, the regional capital, to observe the visibility, temperature, wind speed and precipitation on these roads, said the official.

They will join 15 existing manned and unmanned stations, completing Lhasa's weather monitoring and warning system.

The stations will help minimize weather-related damage to highways and tourist routes by automatically gathering and delivering accurate weather information to meteorological authorities, said the official.

Lhasa is situated on the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where frequent snow, sleet and downpours pose safety risks to vehicles.
