BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Australia's willingness to join a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol will bring positive effects, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Friday.
Hong made the remarks after a regular press briefing when asked to comment on Australia's position.
Key greenhouse gas emitter Australia on Friday said it will sign up for a second round of the Kyoto Protocol environmental protection treaty.
Hong said the Government of Australia made the decision just before the convention of Doha Conference for Climate Change, which will help the meeting reach relevant arrangements.
China hopes Australia can help counter the challenge of climate change by substantially fulfilling historical responsibility and legal obligation of emissions reduction, Hong added.
