BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's journalists should focus their news reporting on the masses to better serve the public, according to senior Chinese leader Li Changchun.
On Friday, Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said more effort should be devoted to the lives and expectations of the public to help improve the interaction between people and the news.
He made his comments while greeting journalists at China's annual top journalism awards.
Li congratulated the prize-winners at the 22nd China Journalism Awards and the 12th Changjiang Taofen Awards, which was named after famous Chinese journalists Fan Changjiang (1909-1970) and Zou Taofen (or Tsou Tao-fen, 1895-1944).
He said focusing news on the people would help enhance and influence reporting. By doing this, the media could better support the targets of the Party and the country, as well as better serve the people, said Li.
Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, accompanied Li at the event and delivered a speech at the prize-giving ceremony, which was attended by more than 500 editors and reporters.
Liu acknowledged "the extreme importance" of the news sector, which is expected to become think tanks and provide opinion and support to the country's development.
He called for "serious consideration" for news reporting to have a social influence to enhance the authority and credibility of the media.
Liu noted that the present and next-stage tasks of political priority was reporting and promoting the upcoming Party congress, which was scheduled to open on Nov. 8.
