Lawyers' rights guaranteed in China's judicial reform

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China has tried to provide a legal guarantee for lawyers to practice in courts and reducing barriers in evidence collection in recent years, according to a white paper on the nation's judicial reform released Tuesday.

The current law stipulates that the representation or defense opinions presented in court by a lawyer shall not be subject to legal prosecution so long as they do not compromise national security, maliciously defame others or seriously disrupt court order, according to the document released by the Information Office of the State Council.  Full story

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Inmates are required to work in China's prisons and get paid as the country is striving to build a just, clean, civilized and efficient prison system, a white paper said Tuesday.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China has established a state compensation system to compensate citizens, legal persons or other organizations if their lawful rights and interests are damaged by state organs or their functionaries in the course of enforcing their power in accordance with the law, a white paper said Tuesday.

The daily payment for infringement upon a citizen's right to freedom was increased from 17.16 yuan (around 6.5 U.S. dollars) in 1995 to 162.65 yuan in 2012, said the white paper "Judicial Reform in China" issued by the State Council Information Office.  Full story
